چکیده

Atkinson attempts to link “phoneme diversity” with the spread of language from Africa, explicitly attempting to draw parallels with human genetic diversity, frequently shown to be highest in Africa and lowest outside that continent. There are four major flaws in Atkinson’s reasoning, which we discuss separately in the sections following: (i) conflating independent dimensions of phonological elaboration into a single dimension (Section 2); (ii) failing to evaluate the true number of independent dimensions of complexity, missed by Atkinson (Section 3); (iii) using ranged data instead of data indicative of true levels of diversity (Section 4); (iv) conflating a measure of complexity with “diversity”, generating a false parallel with biological genetic diversity (Section 5). We leave to others the discussion of how relevant total populations of dialectally diverse national languages can possibly be to an investigation of Pleistocene populations and their languages.

The Relationship between Syntactic and Lexical Complexity in Speech Monologues of EFL Learners

: This study aims to explore the relationship between syntactic and lexical complexity and also the relationship between different aspects of lexical complexity. To this end, speech monologs of 35 Iranian high-intermediate learners of English on three different tasks (i.e. argumentation, description, and narration) were analyzed for correlations between one measure of sy...

Exploring the Role of Cognitive and Procedural Task Complexity in EFL Learners' Attention to L2 System and Form-focused Self-repairs

In L2 development, the cognitive complexity of tasks plays a crucial role in task performance and language features produced. However, there have only been few studies addressing the impact of task complexity on EFL learners' attention to L2 system and form-focused self-repairs (FFS).This study explores the role of increasing cognitive task complexity in EFL learners' form-focused attention (FF...

Assessment of genetic diversity in Pythium aphanidermatum isolates using ISSR and rep-CR methods

Sixty isolates of Pythium aphanidermatum as the causal agent of sugar beet root rot were selected on the basis of their geographical origins, morphological and genetic diversity studies. Pathogenicity test using the Kruskal-Wallis analysis showed significant differences between the pathogenic potential of isolates. Based on the growth rate, isolates were categorized in two groups with low and h...
